Filler or Collagen Stimulation? | Seattle Injector

Do I Need Filler or Does My Skin Need Something Else?

“I think I need filler.”

I hear this often during consultations. And sometimes filler is exactly the right treatment. But sometimes what you’re noticing isn’t actually a lack of volume.

It may be a change in your skin.

As we age, we experience changes in collagen, elasticity, facial structure, fat distribution, and skin quality. All of these can contribute to looking more tired or noticing that your face doesn’t look quite the way it used to.

The important part is figuring out what has actually changed before deciding how to treat it.

Not Every Sign of Aging Is Volume Loss

Dermal filler can be a beautiful tool when it’s used for the right reason.

It can restore support, improve proportion, soften certain transitions, and create subtle balance within the face.

But adding volume isn’t the answer to every concern.

Sometimes what a patient is seeing is thinner skin, decreased elasticity, texture changes, or gradual collagen loss. In those situations, continuing to add filler may not address the underlying issue.

That’s why I don’t begin a consultation by asking, “How many syringes do we need?”

I begin by looking at the whole face.

Filler and Collagen Stimulation Do Different Things

One of the easiest ways to think about this is that filler and collagen-stimulating treatments have different jobs.

Dermal filler is generally used when we want to strategically restore support, improve proportions, or replace volume in a specific area.

Collagen-stimulating treatments take a different approach. Rather than simply adding volume, treatments such as biostimulators and certain skin rejuvenation procedures are designed to support the body’s own collagen production over time.

The changes are gradual.

For the right patient, that can mean improved firmness, skin quality, and structural support without trying to “fill” every area where aging is becoming visible.

And sometimes the best plan includes both.

Your Skin May Need Attention Before More Volume

Skin quality has a huge impact on how youthful and healthy a face appears.

You can have beautiful facial proportions and still feel like something looks tired if the skin itself is showing changes in texture, pigmentation, elasticity, or collagen.

This is where treatments such as professional skincare, chemical peels, microchanneling, collagen stimulation, and other skin-rejuvenation treatments may become part of the conversation.

I often think of it as treating the foundation as well as the structure.

Injectables can’t replace healthy skin, and skincare can’t recreate structural support when it has been lost.

The right treatment depends on what your face actually needs.

Sometimes the Best Treatment Plan Is a Long-Term One

Aesthetic medicine doesn’t have to be about fixing everything in one appointment.

In fact, I often prefer not to.

We may start with skin quality, allow collagen-stimulating treatments time to work, and reassess before deciding whether filler would add anything meaningful.

Or we may restore a small amount of structural support first and then focus on the skin.

There isn’t one formula that works for everyone.

My philosophy is structure before volume and placement over amount.

The goal is not to keep adding treatments. It’s to use the right treatment at the right time.

How Do You Know What You Actually Need?

This is where a good facial assessment matters.

When I meet with a patient, I’m looking at more than the area they point to in the mirror. I’m considering facial structure, movement, proportions, volume changes, skin quality, and how everything works together.

Sometimes that confirms exactly what the patient was thinking.

Other times, we end up creating a completely different plan.

And I think that’s an important part of real aesthetic care.

You shouldn’t have to diagnose your own face before walking through the door.

My Approach at La Clinique Aesthetics

I’m Lynda “Lynn” Borge-Jouini, RN, CANS, also known as Injector Lynn. I’m a Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist through the Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board, a registered nurse since 2009, and have specialized in aesthetic medicine since 2015.

At La Clinique Aesthetics in Seattle, I take a conservative, anatomy-based approach to injectables and skin rejuvenation.

Sometimes that means filler. Sometimes it means supporting collagen or improving the skin first. Sometimes it means doing less than you expected.

The goal isn’t more treatment.

It’s knowing what will make the most meaningful difference while still allowing you to look like yourself.

If you’re noticing changes in your face or skin but aren’t sure what treatment you need, that’s exactly what a consultation is for.
